Description
Death From Afar "Marine Corps Sniper" CPL "Peepsight" Pendas USMC Korea 1951 Painting by Col. Charles Waterhouse, USMC book advertising poster. Signed by Co-authors Roy & N A Chandler,USMC Sniper Carlos Hathcock
and Peepsight Pendas (another famous sniper who retired as a Captain). It is in an inexpensive frame with a small torn top left corner (about 1/4/") which won't be seen if put in a decent frame. The poster is in very good condition ( I would put excellent but it does have the slightest ripple throughout from having had a cardboard backing for awhile - see photos as it shows this). The signatures are excellent (see photos) and not affected at all by the minor ripple. The Death From Afar books were published by Chandler & Chandler. Carlos Hathcock would visit with the Chandler's at different Gun Shows, at one of which he signed this poster. Measures 22" wide x 28" high. Roy Chandler ( or as we fondly knew him as "Rock") was a cherished friend of our family, most notably my brother Steve. Rock would have breakfast with Steve, my father and St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron once a week for years after he married his wife Kate and located in St. Mary's City, Md.. Sheriff Cameron (who has had sniper training himself and was nationally recognized for his department's handling of a public high school shooting a couple of years ago) witnessed this poster being signed as well as one that he has. Rock had this one also signed by Peepsight Pendas and gifted it to my brother. He left Steve many signed books ( to include Whitefeather, the only authorized biography of the iconic Marine Corps sniper Carlos Hathcock ), a copy of Rock's fathers exploits as a prison guard and correction officer for over 20 years, and many other personal items. Rock Chandler passed away from cancer in 2015.
There is another listing on my sight for the signed White Feather book. Please see that for added information and more provenance.
Also pull up the Wikipedia page on Gunnery Sgt. Hathcock and read of his legendary exploits. His is one of the most sought after of all military autographs, and rightfully so. See Rock's Wikipedia page also for some insight to how great of an author he was. His brother and he also were makers of some of the finest sniper rifles made ( they owned the Iron Brigade Armory ).
Seagal actually
purchased
a rifle from the Chandlers.
I could go on with many stories about Rock. One of my favorites is when he was hired (along with Sheriff Cameron) as an expert on weaponry for a movie (Sniper) and he talked of how they treated him like royalty.
So provenance here is as good as it gets and this item is guaranteed to pass any certification process. This poster is unique as I have not ever seen another signed by both authors, Gunnery Sgt Carlos Hathcock and Captain Gerald G. Pendas. Carlos Hathcock also has added a W with a symbol that obviously is done in reference to his nickname of Whitefeather. I have not seen this on any other of his signatures. Starting out with Semper Fi and ending with USMC (RET) it is just a wonderful signature (see photos). Carlos Hathcock once visited Rock in St Mary's County (also my home) and they had lunch at the deli (Showtime Deli) owned by Steve and another brother of mine. He was wheelchair bound at the time due to a debilitating disease that eventually took his life. Sheriff Cameron was there and told me military personnel from nearby Patuxent Naval Air Station that found out it was the famous sniper were in awe of him. Some were in tears. LT Col Norman Chandler actually personalizes his signature on the poster to Showtime Deli and Steve. A true military treasure. Please view the photos and thanks for looking.
Since this item was a gift from Rock Chandler to Steve and the autographs are all signed to him, he has instructed me to add in as a bonus a Presentation copy of the book "Death From Afar Volume 111 The Black Book". There were only 780 presentation copies and this one was #23. He felt like it would only add to the provenance of his relationship with the Chandlers and to the confidence of anyone considering acquiring this valuable poster. All presentation copies are signed by both Chandler brothers and this one also has a personal note to Steve from Rock Chandler. Quite the bonus as the presentation books of the Death From Afar series go for over 0 themselves. The book is in new condition. View the last two photos to see the item.
